Keeran Bissessur, a stalwart at Unicorn, has been a remarkable presence since the very inception of our journey. In 1983, he played an integral role during the demolition of the Pharmacie Nouvelle site at Royal Road, laying the groundwork for Unicorn’s emergence.
As the 3rd employee, the first two being a secretary and a medical representative, Keeran witnessed Unicorn’s transformation from its early days at St Jean Pharmacy to subsequent locations like Leoville L’Homme and Royal Road. A true Jack of all trades, Keeran’s versatility has been a cornerstone of Unicorn’s growth.
As Unicorn progressed under the leadership of one man, Mr Kumar Gunness, Keeran fully embraced the growth and witnessed the steer to take the company forward, progressing slowly but steadily. His journey has been one of growth, evolving with the company and adapting to technological changes—from sending telex to fax and eventually embracing email.
What sets Keeran apart is his genuine concern for his fellow colleagues. He believes in providing special consideration for employees, fostering a sense of camaraderie within the Unicorn family. For Keeran, working with Unicorn isn’t just a job; it’s a personal commitment—a dedication that reflects in his unwavering loyalty and contribution.

Rouben Marden, our esteemed Store Manager, has been an integral part of the Unicorn family since 1986, joining at the age of 26 when the team comprised around 15 employees. Starting as a Storekeeper, he quickly ascended to the role of Store Manager in 1988, with a distinct focus on Parker pens.
Rouben has grown with Unicorn, embodying the sentiment of ‘mone grandi ensam avek Unicorn.’ Witnessing Unicorn’s growth over the years has been not just a journey of professional development but also a source of encouragement. From the early days on Royal Road to expansions at GFA, Champ de Mars, and finally Port Louis, Rouben has been a constant force.
In the landmark year of 2019-2020, Unicorn achieved the remarkable feat of becoming No. 1 in wholesale, a testament to Rouben’s dedicated efforts. Despite the challenges, he finds joy in working in the store, engaging with clients, and ensuring customer satisfaction.
Rouben’s commitment extends beyond the ordinary, sometimes even working until midnight and even 01:00 to fulfill client orders, to ensure that no order is missed. In his own words, he firmly believes that ‘ène commande pas kapav rater.’ His dedication and hard work stand as a shining example of the Unicorn spirit.
In my 23-year journey at Unicorn, I started as an Invoicing Clerk, the sole team member without Pharmacy knowledge. Through perseverance, I progressed to lead the Invoicing & Customer Care team for 15 years. Aligning with Unicorn’s vision, I embraced the role of Customer Care, becoming the heart of Unicorn.
What fuels my passion is the daily challenge – over 95% of which I handle with joy. I thrive on building customer loyalty, using a positive ‘dialogue’ to resolve even the toughest situations. It’s a demanding role, but I approach it with a smile.
Key qualities for success in this role include professionalism, the right tone, body language, patience, tolerance, and a proactive approach. These qualities have not only defined my journey but also contributed to Unicorn’s success. Here’s to many more years of growth and success together!
In my 15-year journey with Unicorn, I’ve proudly served as a Représentant Medical. What sets my perspective apart is a steadfast focus on duty rather than difficulties. During the challenging times of Covid-91, the solidarity between upper management and the entire team, including our drivers, showcased a true family spirit.
I believe in seeing the glass half full and exploring how we can fill the rest. Negativity has no place in my outlook; it only dulls the vibrancy of life. Being extremely versatile, I don’t shy away from any task – whether it’s lending a hand in the store or personally handling deliveries when the need arises. ‘Pou mwa, bizin fer travay la marse’.
To me, the title of “Manager” is more than a label; it’s a responsibility to lead by example and contribute wherever possible. In my eyes, a leader is someone who embraces challenges, and fosters a sense of camaraderie within the team.
